Silk Draperies – Elegant Silk, Queen of Textiles

Interesting Facts

It’s a miracle at all that a tiny little caterpillar and its cocoon could be the source of one of the most beautiful textiles we know. Cultivated for thousands of years, silk continues to be the paragon of elegance and refinement. It is also amazingly versatile, taking many forms. Silk threads can be woven into gossamer sheers or can be made into velvets; it is one of the only fabrics which has the capacity to keep you warm in winter but cool in summer. It is, because of its protein structure, it is the most hypoallergenic of fabrics.

The soft sheen which we recognize as unique to silk is a result of its prism like structure which refracts light entering and leaving it at differing angles…there is nothing like silk.

Today’s faux silks are remarkable for their ability to mimic both the appearance and the “hand” of fine silk. Seen by themselves, they are quite convincing and an economical and practical alternative for those with budgets or performance related issues.

The real deal however is not inexpensive. The relative high cost of silks are due to the labor intensive methods that must be used to cultivate them. It takes about 2500 cocoons to make one pound of silk; each cocoon containing one continuous thread measuring about 2/3 of a mile.

Working With Silk – Silk is the strongest natural fiber known to man, equivalent in tensile strength to steel. Ironically, exposure to sunlight is quite detrimental to silk fabric causing it to become brittle and experience “dry rot”. Therefore when working with silks as window treatments, they should not only be lined but also interlined. This is essential as it wouldn’t be very long before your un-interlined treatments would be ruined. Readily available from many catalog companies are silk panels for what seems like a very good price. These are never interlined, nor are they custom grade goods. It’s important to remember that they are ready-made quality.

The investment in silk would be money poorly spent if it weren’t honored by making it into something custom, complete with all the special techniques and handling that silk fabrics require. Workrooms demand a higher price for working with silk, hems and sides need to be hand finished as the fabric is too slippery to run through the machines, and yes, they need to be lined and interlined. Only the best stitchers in the workroom are allowed to work on silk. This is because the stitchers who are highly skilled do not make mistakes. Stitching a seam and having to rip it out is not a healthy thing for silk; it leaves a line of demarcation and you can see the prior needle marks.

Silk is not for everyone. Often my clients will ask for silk. As it is such a specialized textile, it is my obligation as a designer to advise them of the pros and cons of using silk in all sorts of home furnishings.

Firstly it is a lifestyle fabric…while silk is tremendously strong, it is also compromised by sunlight therefore, I don’t recommend it for south facing windows and/or rooms with abundant all-day lighting even if the treatments are interlined. The only exception is if there are some sort of light-filtering shades in the windows as well as the draperies. Silk is also is subject to spotting if it gets water on it so I will not use silk on any window where it may be subject to splashing or humidity.

Secondly, it is a natural fabric and inherent in it are all the irregularities which give it its character and texture. It is not perfectly smooth or uniform. It also wrinkles, not in the way that linen does but in the way that it sits or as we say in the trade, its “hand”. Silk has a stiffer hand and tends to fall in sculpted folds. This is unique to silk and treasured for that very effect. If you are someone who doesn’t like irregularities or “wrinkles” then silk is not for you! Puddled draperies in silk are the epitome of elegance; in fact I like to see silk draperies made with a generous allowance for such. While you certainly can make drapery panels without the puddled effect, I think that doing so is not taking advantage of one of the most beautiful characteristics of silk. Silk draperies, Roman shades or valances in a dining space…lights dimmed, candles lit…there is nothing like the unique quality of silk and the way that it handles light to create the most delicious atmosphere. It will enhance your dining and entertaining experience.

Silk can be for everyone If… The good news is that silk blends beautifully with just about most any other fiber so while 100% silk may not suit your lifestyle or sensibilities, perhaps one of the silk blends might. Silk/linen and silk/rayon blends perform beautifully and still manage to impart the special quality of light for which silk is known. Often fabrics will contain as little as 7-10% silk which is just enough to impart that special sheen. So if you think you can’t afford silk or don’t want to be bothered with its fussiness, ask your designer to show you some silk blend fabrics for your next project.

Leather Furniture Consumer’s Guide – Abbreviated Version

leather furniture consumer's guide - abbreviated version

leather furniture consumer's guide - abbreviated version

Planning on buying leather furniture? Did you know there are different types of leather? Which is best for you? Read on and learn some important tips to keep in mind when shopping.

Start by thinking about the usage patterns you expect with your new leather pieces. Will the furniture be placed in an active, “high-impact” setting with children, pets, food and drinks galore? Or, is your home a quiet, “low-impact” environment?

Quality leather is a remarkably durable material that will offer many years of comfort. However, the right type of leather should be selected based upon how you expect the furniture to be enjoyed. As a leather furniture repair and restoration specialist, I repeatedly hear from my clients how their sales person, designer, etc. never told them the leather would stain, fade, tear, etc. So, avoid these problems by learning a few simple keys and asking a few simple questions. To understand the issues let me take you through a mini-primer about leather.

There are two ways of coloring upholstery grade leather — with dyes only or with dyes and pigments. Leather colored strictly with a dye is referred to as unfinished, whereas pigmented leather is classified as finished. So, what’s the difference?

If leather is colored only with dye then there is no protective coating. It is sometimes referred to as “pure-aniline” leather. (Aniline is a type of dye that colors leather.) This leather is soft, supple to the touch. Its color is rich and deep as dyes are translucent and they penetrate, often completely through the leather. The leather’s natural beauty is accentuated by the dye giving the furniture a luxurious look and feel. Only the finest hides can qualify to be unfinished, so unsurprisingly, it’s the most expensive category. However, there is a dark side. This class of leather stains easily (these hides are highly porous) and the color fades, in some cases very rapidly. (UV’s the culprit.)

Finished leather is colored with the same aniline dye as unfinished leather however these hides go through a secondary coloring process. A pigmented coating (finish) is applied that is chemically engineered specifically for leather. It has to flex and allow the leather to breath so it has unique attributes that differentiate it from common wall paint. Pigmented leather finishes are opaque, creating a colored film on top of the hide. The color coating is then augmented with a clear coat forming its primary protection. This clear coat also dictates the sheen, from gloss to matte. Quality finished leather may not feel as soft and supple as unfinished, but will be able to withstand the rigors of an active household. It won’t stain nearly as readily. It’s easier to clean, and fades so slowly, you’ll never notice it.

Your first key is placement. Simply put, active, high impact environment like a family room, media center, conference room, dining room, etc. dictates finished leather. A low impact home, with UV tinted windows and little threat of staining can indulge the beauty of unfinished leather.

The next step is to consider your budget. This is where your expectations are appropriately set. There are two primary considerations, the leather and the frame.

Top-grain leather is the most durable, but will cost more. This is the epidermis of the skin which offers vast majority of the hide’s durability. Split-hide leather (leather “split” from the epidermis) won’t stand up to the test of time in an active household, but as a low grade is generally more affordable. If you want a piece that will last a long time, then you must insist on top-grain leather.

The internals or guts of the furniture should be considered. Is it constructed using hard wood appropriately joined with tight, solid fits, or is it slapped together with cheap pressed board, staples and cardboard? (No kidding, cardboard.) Clearly, solid construction will cost more, but offer many years of trouble free service.

Color selection is something else to think about. The lighter the color, the more maintenance it will require to keep the leather looking new and clean.

Finally, is it all leather or did the manufacturer sneak in some vinyl? Vinyl and all its fancy name derivatives like leatherette, leather-mate, leather-match etc. is a synthetic, not the real deal. It won’t feel or wear like leather. It’s less expensive than leather, but simply doesn’t have the durability of quality leather.

So, based on your budget, set your expectations correctly and think about how the piece will be used. Then when you shop ask the following questions.

1. Is the leather finished or unfinished? Remember to consider placement and usage patterns.

2. Is it top-grain leather? If it isn’t, it won’t have the durability you think you’re getting.

3. Is it all leather or is some of it vinyl? Don’t be duped.

4. How is the frame constructed? Remember the story of the three little pigs? If it’s going to last, it has to be well built.

With the answers to these questions at least you’ll know what you’re buying. For more information, go to this web-site

How to Lay Seamless Travertine Marble Tile Successfully

how to lay seamless travertine marble tile successfully

how to lay seamless travertine marble tile successfully

Laying a travertine marble tile floor seamlessly (i.e., without grout) is a skill that you can easily develop. Only a little bit of knowledge, a few tools, patience, and diligence are required to complete this job successfully.

There is no need to be intimated by this type of project. After all, if the ancient Romans and Greeks were able to do it, why can’t you?

There are only a few things besides the tile that are required to complete this kind of home improvement job: a thin-set mortar, notched trowel, a level, and a soft rubber mallet. The difficulty level of this do-it-yourself project is considered to be medium or moderate; however, that is due to the fact that some tiles may need to be reset in order to ensure a level plane across the floor.

It Is All In the Preparation

Preparation is key to a seamless installation of this type of natural stone. Ninety-nine percent of all successful home improvement jobs start with proper prepping of the working surface. For any surface–whether it be a floor, countertop, or wall, make the working area as level as possible before you do anything else. Check your work with a level prior to any travertine tile installation.

Application of Thinset On Flooring – Kick It Up A Notch

Working from the middle of the room, use the trowel’s notched edge to apply an even coat of thinset mortar to the flooring surface, spreading it evenly in the area where you will set the travertine. Take your time when doing this in order to avoid ridges and/or air pockets which may cause the tile to settle improperly.

Application of Thinset On Back of Tile – Flat Is Beautiful

Now it is time to use the trowel’s flat side to apply a skim coat thinset to the back of the travertine marble tile. Ensure it is evenly distributed throughout, taking care to coat the edges of the tile.

Apply the Tile With Gentle But Firm Persuasion

Set the tile in place on the floor, applying pressure, and moving it back and forth in all directions to form a good bond and to eliminate any unforeseen trapped air bubbles/pockets.

Then it is time to set the second tile next to the first, lining up the corners, and moving that tile back and forth as you did the first one.

Make sure the tiles are the same height. Using a soft rubber mallet, tap gently on the second travertine marble tile until it abuts the first tile. There should be a tight fit with no gaps.

Keep a Level Head and Get a Level Floor

Lay a level on the tile floor to ensure that tiles are flat and flush. If a tile is too low, remove the tile and add more thinset on the floor. If the opposite is true and the tile is too high, pry up the travertine and remove excessive thinset. Either way, there is a remedy so you can get a level floor by keeping a level head and doing what needs to be done to get the perfectly seamless travertine marble tile floor.

Having a home with the design that we truly want is something that would really make us feel good. Although most houses built these days have general designs, it would be better if we could come up with our own design to give our homes a more personalized touch. We all certainly would want everything in our house to be perfect as much as possible. Designing our own houses is very practical, fun to do, and is not really hard to do. We do not really need to hire an interior decorator or any home design experts if we want to save money since we can also do it on our own. We just need to be creative and have fun while we do it.

Take your time and think what kind of design that you really want to incorporate in your house. If you want more references, you can just search the internet for a wide variety of design options. It is important that you make a final decision since it may cost you more instead of saving money if the design is already completed and you change your mind and have it redone. After you make the final decision, you can start searching all the materials that you would need. You also do not need to rush this part since you would want to compare different rates from different stores first. It would be also a great idea to ask for recommendations from your family, friends, and other people you know who could help you.

After thorough considerations and preparations, you may start designing either the interior or the exterior part of the house whichever you are comfortable with. Choosing the right colors could help you set the ambiance.

You may also want to consider Feng Shui for good luck but only if you believe in that practice. Aside from using common furniture such as sofas, chairs, and tables, you may also want to add other components inside your house. Consider putting paintings, wall mounted fountains, and other extra fixtures to add more life to the interior design. For outdoors, putting sectional patio furniture may just do the trick to liven up the atmosphere outside of your house. Wooden, metal, or plastic chairs are also ideal outdoors. Whatever design you want for your own house, it is best to start at larger places down to the smaller ones which require more detail.

Depending on your preferences, you may want to have a minimal or simple design. Not only that you can save money but you can also save space. When you are designing in your house, keep in mind that this is a place where you would spend much of your time so you should consider putting emphasis to comfort and functionality. Designing a house also does not need to be complicated. As long as you are creative, you are resourceful, and you know what you want, it should just be a breeze. Just do not rush things so you will not have regrets in the future.

Picture Lighting – The Most Common Question People Ask

picture lighting - the most common question people ask

picture lighting - the most common question people ask

As the operator of a web site devoted to picture light for the last several years, I have encountered questions on just about every aspect of artwork lighting and the methods used to provide it. I have listed the most common questions and the responses that our team of professionals has given to them over that time. The good news about waiting until now to publish a document such as this one is that the answers have been time proven to be effective.

Probably the most common question that we receive, almost daily, is that of addressing the visibility of the cord. The question is always the same and people ask it as a way of determining whether or not they will purchase a picture light. The question of eliminating the cord can be answered best by sharing the multiple ways we have discovered to eliminate the need or to hide the cord leading from the electric outlet up to the picture light.

One of the first and best ways of addressing the cord involves hiding it from sight. By installing a recessed outlet, many times called a clock outlet, directly behind the actual picture the entire cord and circuit can be hidden from sight. Our customers typically take this one step further and then cut the cord to the proper, smaller length and then use a device called a snap on plug to allow for a convenient way to attach an electrical plug to the cord. We then will recommend that the customer install a simmer switch on the circuit.

The use of cord covers can also be very effective. The cord covers can make the appearance of the cord practically disappear. The cord covers are also very easy to install. When people ask where they can get cord covers we recommend that they go to their local home improvement store. The items are usually located in the painting section or the electrical section of the store.

A less expensive and convenient approach to lessening the visibility of the cord is to simply paint it. Just about every cord on lamps that our store sells is paintable. While I am not completely certain for the cords of other picture lights, ours are all paintable. Painting the cord the same color of the wall will allow it to blend in so well that the cord will barely be able to be seen.

Another less expensive alternative that does not involve electricity is to place plants, furniture, display tables or other decor in a position to hide most of the cord. In my house we have taken this approach and it seems to work great in the longer hallway where the picture lights are installed. We have used a larger staple to directly attach the cord to the baseboard. This keeps the cord straight and dramatically improves its appearance.

Finally, we recommend that our customers consider using a battery powered picture light. The lights will provide attractive minimum light and will last up to 45 hours. A few models are even rechargeable.

Types of Wallpaper

Today’s wallpapers are convenient and practical to use in case you want to renovate or change the appearance of your walls. You can choose from various widths (18 to 27 inches) of wallpaper in the market. A whole sheet of wallpaper can cover an area of 36 square feet but since walls too have different sizes, certain parts of the wallpaper sheet are trimmed so one sheet usually ends up with a covered area of about 30 square feet of wall area.

Wallpaper has indeed undergone important innovations. These days, if you are shopping around for wallpapers and related supplies, you can choose from a lot of wallpaper with extensive designs. There are wallpapers which need separate pastes so they can be attached to walls. There are also wallpapers which are pre-pated at the back, installers need only to remove the protective covering and the wallpaper is ready to be installed on the wall. Today’s wallpapers are also made of different materials depending on which type of wallpaper they are.

  • A Common Wallpaper is one which requires the installer to apply adhesives at the back before it can be attached onto the wall. It is the classic wallpaper that adds grace and elegance to homes. Common wallpaper is ideally used in walls and areas where it is less likely to be damaged or worn such as in dining rooms, bedrooms and living room.
  • A Foil Wallpaper can create a small area to be interesting with details on the walls. It is wallpaper made with a metal foil printed with a variety of patterns. This type of wallpaper requires serious and considerable amount of effort when being attached to the wall. Once folded or wrinkled, the foil wallpaper will not look very inviting. It also tends to reveal and show the flaws of the walls on which it was attached.
  • The Vinyl Wallpaper has been replacing the Common wallpaper in popularity. This wallpaper may be used in variety of purposes; can be bought from paint hardware store and other home renovation shops. It may be used in almost any room of the house including bathrooms, kitchens and nurseries. Some vinyl wallpapers are manufactured with mildew resisting materials. It is easier to work with, durable and can endure some light scrubbing or exposure to moisture.
  • The Flock Wallpaper is most commonly attached to the walls of dining rooms and more formal area which needs some decorative highlights. Flock wallpaper was originally made by gluing onto the sheet of paper some wool waste product. The loose flock particles must be vacuumed first before application. The flocks are washable yet may be damaged when rubbed or scrubbed.
  • The Fabric Wallpaper is made from cloth and textiles. It is difficult to work with fabric wallpaper and prevent it from getting stained.
  • The Grasscloth wallpaper is an exotic type of wall covering as it is made of grasses woven together. Areas or spaces where it is likely to get worn are ideal to be decorated with grasscloth wallpaper. Since it has intricate and interesting design, children are likely to touch it and thus result to possible wear.

How To Use Wall Hangings Properly?

how to use wall hangings properly?

how to use wall hangings properly?

Wall hangings were used as decorators in homes, temples, churches, and buildings to decorate them, by various cultures from the early times. This trend is followed in contemporary times also. The wall hangings designed from different cultural environments exhibit a historical outlook and are very resilient as they are from textile background.

Now a day, wall hangings have become an important part of home decoration as they can be used in various exclusive ways. The wall hangings can be designed in a number of lovely styles like landscapes, modern art and flowery wall hangings provided the weaver knows his work excellently. The wall hangings are enjoyed by the art fans as well as the interior decorators as they are a good complement to the traditional art. In medieval times the wall hangings were prepared using wool but now high quality colors and latest fibers are used for this purpose. They can be used to make classical as well as traditional wall hangings.

In modern wall hanging tapestry, the use of chenille is popular. This is because this versatile material is soft and flexible. If you wish to decorate your home then the use of chenille will make your décor elegant, warm and adaptable. Chenille can be used for a wide variety of settings in home décor like tapestry throws, wall tapestries and cushions.

The high class wall hangings are very useful as they provide motivation to the decorators as well as historical and traditional sense to the viewer. They also make the living area look spacious.

A vivacious colored wall hanging makes your room more spacious and bigger than it actually is. But for a room that is already big, you can line up a number of wall hangings of different sizes to make it look smaller than it actually is.

The Guide on Making a Decorative Applique Candle

the guide on making a decorative applique candle

the guide on making a decorative applique candle

Decorating homemade candles is great fun and actually easier than most people think. The best thing about decorative candle making is that it can be completed within a few minutes and requires very little skills to complete. I have one such project for you today: appliqué candles!

Appliqué candles are large, pillar candles that have been installed with appliqués or wax decorations.

Make appliqué candles

What you will need:

  • Large pillar candle (you can, of course, make your own pillar candle too)
  • Cut-and-carve sheet wax (this will serve as the adhesive for the appliqués). If you do not want to buy cut-and-carve sheet wax, you can use a bit of melted paraffin wax instead. Paraffin wax is perfect for square-shaped candles.
  • Flat surface to cut the wax appliqués
  • Cookie cutters (the shapes should ideally be appropriate for the themes that you have in mind; for example, if you are making Christmas candles, the cookie cutters could be of Santa Claus or peppermint canes)

The steps on making appliqué decorative candles:

  1. Place your wax in a melting can, and place the melting can in a pot that has been filled with water. Let the wax melt.
  2. Add the dye and the fragrance, if you are going for colored and scented candles. When all the ingredients have been mixed well, don a pair of mitts and pour the wax on a flat surface.
  3. It is highly recommended that you place a wax sheet or cookie sheet on the flat surface before pouring the wax. Use several sheets if the surface is wooden. The sheets will absorb the wax later on in the process. When hardened, you can easily remove the hardened shapes. If you have a spare baking pan, you can use that too.
  4. After pouring the wax, allow the wax to harden slightly, but not too much that you will have difficulty in cutting shapes out of it using the cookie cutters.
  5. Cut shaped wax pieces in such a way that you maximize the available wax.
  6. After cutting shapes through the wax, let the entire batch harden completely.
  7. When the wax is ready, simply apply pressure on the bottom part of the baking pan you are using. The pressure should be able to remove the shapes.
  8. Using a heat gun or a similar apparatus, apply some heat to the appliqué. When the appliqué becomes pliable, add a bit of paraffin wax to the underside of the appliqué and heat the appliqué once again. When the paraffin wax becomes liquid, set the appliqué to the pillar candle.
  9. Allow the appliqué to dry before wrapping the pillar candle.
