A Decorating Poem

a decorating poem

Sometimes, you do something, and it makes you want to write about it. Sometimes, the words dance around in your head, forming a poem, or a series of paragraphs. This was one of those times. I re-decorated my living room over the course of a weekend, and the words were just there, waiting to be put on paper. At first, it seemed silly to send this out into the universe, but it made me smile every time I read it, and it, happily, reminded me of that crazy day of decorating. I hope it makes you smile too.

She wants to move the furniture,

On a Sunday afternoon.

It’s always fun to decorate,

But first, she empties the room.

The room looks dull, so she gets some paint,

Decides to tape off a square.

Big and gorgeous, chalkboard black,

Perhaps, she’ll paint a pair?

The paint is drying, furniture is out,

The rug she brings back in.

It’s old, it’s small, but has to do,

Now for the fun to begin.

She pushes the sofa across the room,

Moves the rug at an angle.

Amused, she decides to vacuum the floor,

After finding a fork and a bangle.

Thought she was careful, but not enough,

Looks down at the scratched wooden floor.

No need to fix it, just cover it up,

By moving the rug some more.

The sofa sits on the rug, looking big,

She sits on a chair next to it.

The chair is old, the fabric worn,

And now, she’s gone straight through it!

She picks it up, and throws it out,

With a strength she never knew.

Another chair is quickly found,

Lucky, she has quite a few.

Another chair, another side,

The sofa is moved again.

She stops, and moves it back some more,

some more, then more again!

Decides to have a cup of tea,

To think of lots of things.

Looks at the mess, and dreams of poems,

Of Cabbages and Kings.

Up she gets, and washes her cup,

Determined to finish the room.

She checks the paint, and sees that it’s dry,

Sweeps the floor with a broom.

Brings in a bookshelf, some lamps and a painting.

Pillows, photographs, china and tables.

Arranges flowers and washes the floor,

Straightens the curtains, and opens the door.

The afternoon over, she smiles, at the end.

Her home is now different, but not a penny did she spend…..

Perfect Party Supplies for a Hawaii Five-O Themed Celebration

perfect party supplies for a hawaii five-o themed celebration

perfect party supplies for a hawaii five-o themed celebration

During the Seventies, the elite force known as Hawaii Five-O headed by Detective Steve McGarett of the Honolulu state police caught the imagination of thousands of home viewers. Currently, a new generation of TV audience is discovering the thrill of watching the revival of this famous crew as they solved a challenging case in each episode. For all the fans of both the old and new versions of Hawaii Five-O, a similarly themed celebration would be great during the holidays, on a birthday, or for a summer house party. See the following ideas for Hawaiian Tiki and Luau party supplies.

Seashells, Starfish, Seahorse, and Beach Decors

Whether the scene is a tropical paradise situated inland or a sandy beach beside the ocean, an array of seashells and starfishes should never be missed in your party decors. You can buy a mixed scoop of tiny shells or a kilo of brightly colored horn or whelk seashells. You may use large flat scallops to serve side dishes during meals. You also have a choice between white clams, cowries, and spiked shells as place card holders. You can add mini starfishes to the party invitation along with a sprinkle of sand for a nice beach party theme.

One of the best ideas for a table décor is a hurricane lamp made from wide rum glasses. Fill these up with a couple of inches of sand. Decorate with tiny seashells and mini starfishes before pushing down a pillar candle in its midst. Make sure the glass rim is taller than the candle to prevent the breeze from killing the flame sooner.

Tiki Huts and Totem Party Props

Of course, nothing speaks of the Hawaiian heritage more than the scary totem faces we often see on cultural sites. Gracing sculptures, vases, and traditional masks, these grotesque images are both an artistic expression and a symbol of the natives’ reverence towards their gods. Decorate your party venue with totem poles and tiki statues. Choose either cardboard cut-outs or plastic tiki images to set the scene. Sunken tiki backdrops and tiki hut props are also available for instant wall decors. As for the real thing, tiki torches are easy to make with bamboo and kerosene lamps.

Typically, a Hawaiian luau would have leis or grass skirts for the guests to wear. A Frangipani hair clip for the women is also a good idea. A coconut or pineapple cut in half could hold a cocktail juice like Four Season. Some party goers like to drink beer. So, wrap a little grass skirt around the bottles as decoration.

How to Reinforce a Stone Foundation Wall With a New Concrete Wall

how to reinforce a stone foundation wall with a new concrete wall

how to reinforce a stone foundation wall with a new concrete wall

Many older homes have foundations made of field stone that may over time have sagged or bowed from the elements pushing on the stones. Since no mortar as we know it today was used, the stones can easily shift. If there has been a serious total collapse of the stone wall, total replacement is necessary. If the problem is less severe, a new concrete reinforcing wall may be in order. If you have an earthen basement floor the job is even easier. Starting on the inside of the basement you must first excavate a trench alongside the existing wall to install a new footing for the reinforcing wall. I would make the footing at least two feet wide but three feet wide is much better. Make the footing one foot deep. The top of the new footing should match the bottom of the stone wall and the new floor will sit on top of the footing. Be careful not to disturb the soils under the stones. There will be no footing under a stone wall. Once you are done excavating, form the footing and install the reinforcing bars. Use at least 5/8′ diameter bars. Run them the full length of the footing and in a three foot wide footing there should be three continuous bars. Now take pieces cut four feet long and bend a one foot bend at one end making an ell shape. These bars will be tied to the inner and outer most footing rebar to form two rows of dowels running the full length of the footing, no more the thirty-two inches apart. When the footing is poured you will see only the vertical part of the bars sticking out. Once the footing concrete is dry, strip all the forms leaving no wood behind for termites to latch on to for dinner.

Now using the same size rebar, install horizontal bars starting three inches up from the footing and place one every twelve inches running the full length of the new wall. Do this on both rows of dowels. These when completed are called wall mats. Using some small scraps of rebar, tie them with wire between the two mats to keep them separated when you pour the heavy concrete. The new wall thickness will depend upon how thick your stone wall is and how badly bowed the stone wall is. My last wall was basically twenty four inches thick but twelve inches thick is a minimum you should build. Your rebar wall mats want to be as close to three inches from both faces of the wall as possible. The inside mat may be a bit more depending on the amount of bow in the stone wall. I used Symonns concrete form panels from my rental store for ease of forming the new wall but you can also build the forms out of wood. The advantage of concrete form panels is they come in all sizes of heights and widths, have clips for easy fastening, have pre-made anchors and so on. You must remember that this is a one sided form. The toughest type by far to build. You must brace it to death and then add some more braces to keep it from moving under the weight of wet concrete. Installation of what is called a whaler brace will keep the forms from bowing out but add kickers galore. On concrete pour day you will need some extra help. Pouring through a basement window is no joke as the guys inside cannot see the guy outside in the ready mix truck.

One man has to stay outside and yell orders through the window. Faster, slower, more, too wet and so on. Inside one man has to do nothing but watch the forms. If something moves he has to immediately stop the pour. Being buried under wet concrete and smashed form panels is no joke. Another person has to vibrate the forms with a mechanical vibrator to assure there are no voids in the concrete. Yet another person can tap the forms with a hammer to assure there is concrete in all the spaces and watch down through the top of the form to assure they are filling up as level as possible. This eliminates putting too much pressure in one spot of the forms at once. Excess pressure can cause the forms to fail. Wet concrete exerts what is called hydraulic pressure sideways against the form work and can amount to tons of pressure. I have seen forms fail that were blown a hundred feet away from the work site. Depending upon how thick your new wall is a two day wait for form removal is more than enough. Twenty four hours is better still. Any spilled concrete will get super hard and make form removals that much harder if you let the concrete sit too long. Again strip all remnants of wood from the work. Back fill the footing and level the floor area to prep it for the new basement floor.

A Short History Of Architectural Drawings

a short history of architectural drawings

a short history of architectural drawings

For hundreds of years architectural drawings were drawn up and reproduced by hand with ink on paper. These scale drawings were drawn according to standard conventions and used as building plans, working sketches, and as records. During the twentieth century technical advances changed the way draftsmen performed their job. The introduction of digital technology has caused a switch to computer aided drafting, or CAD.

The origins of the detailed plans of structures common to modern times was in the Renaissance, when artists made detailed sketches of classical buildings and began planning buildings that they imagined. In those days, the renderings did not include measurements and the conventions for detailed plans had not yet been set. Builders were expected to follow the illustration and work out the details.

As building became more complex, the art of drafting the plans advanced so that everything was spelled out in detail. Working up the plans including all the levels of detail became the process for spelling out engineering and construction problems before beginning the actual building. Creating detailed plans helps to avoid construction delays, to make cost estimates and to help the builder decide to commit to a project.

Eventually, the conventions used in modern architecture were adopted by the architects who prepared the plans. Certain views became standard, such as floor plans, which are horizontal views of the floor of a building usually at a height of three feet, showing how all the objects are arranged. This includes the walls, locations of windows and doors, fittings, stairs, and sometimes furniture in solid lines.

Another view is an elevation, which might be the depiction of an exterior or interior wall of a building. A cross section, similar to a floor plan, is a vertical plane section which cuts through a building. All these are drawn as orthogonal views, which means they are depicted with opposite sides parallel, in other words, the sides do not converge as in a perspective view. These are combined to create comprehensive plans for the building, used at stages to solve engineering problems or construction guides.

Copies of plans at first needed to be laboriously redrawn by hand, which was done on special paper such as vellum that could not shrink or stretch. When the blueprint process was developed, making accurate copies was simplified. Another advance was the switch to tracing paper, which allowed for much easier copies to be made of building plans.

Better tools such as adjustable squares and technical pens cut down on the time and labor needed to produce renderings. Technical drafting aides like the parallel motion drafting table and transfer lettering also helped to reduce the labor in producing drawings.

By far the biggest advance for creating architectural drawings came with the application of computer technology to this discipline. CAD software programs have taken over the production of building plans and have increased both the capabilities and speed of completion for planning structures. The choices for rendering details and materials and solving engineering challenges have been simplified. Digital plotters have made reproducing accurate prints an easy matter

Money Visualization Techniques – 3 Powerful Ways to Attract Massive Wealth and Happiness

money visualization techniques - 3 powerful ways to attract massive wealth and happiness

money visualization techniques - 3 powerful ways to attract massive wealth and happiness

Money visualization techniques help you attract more money and prosperity to your life. Don’t worry though. These wealth attraction methods I am about to impart are easy and even fun to do.

And there’s nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. We all want to gain more money because it gives us access to a better lifestyle. If you’re ready for some awesome tips to attract more money to your life, read on!

Money Visualization Technique # 1: Get Rid of the Shame.

The first thing you need to do is to get rid of your negative emotions. Being embarrassed to visualize that you’re wealthy and fulfilled will only ensure its failure.

If you want to do this right and attract all the wealth that you want, you’re going to have to understand that there is nothing wrong with practicing visualization. If it helps, think about how much more you’ll be able to help others when you have more money.

Money Visualization Technique # 2: Create a Vision Board.

Creating a vision board is a fun idea to attract abundance to your life. Choose the size that you want and put up images or words that connotes money. It can be something like a big dollar sign or something that tells of luxury like a beautiful house or jewelry.

Creating the vision board itself is an important part of the visualization process. As you create your board, focus on the feelings of contentment, happiness and gratitude. Imagine yourself already acquiring all of the things you’re pasting onto the board. Once you’re done, hang it someplace where you can see it everyday.

Money Visualization Technique # 3: Surround Yourself with Abundance.

Another effective method involves surrounding yourself with money. You don’t have to dress yourself in rags just because you’re on a budget. You also don’t have to leave your home rundown because you don’t have the energy to make it look nice.

Make your home seem like the home of someone who’s already made it to the top. And no, I don’t mean get yourself a loan and buy all sorts of home decor. I just want you to have the mindset of someone who’s already successful.

Don’t hang out with people who complain about not having enough either. Find people who are contented with their life, and find the time to mingle with them.

These money visualization techniques can help you a lot if only you’d give them a chance. The results of your visualization won’t always arrive in a form of money. They might come in the form of an opportunity or a person. Open your eyes and see beyond what is visible and obvious.

The Popular Artificial Silver Tip Christmas Tree

the popular artificial silver tip christmas tree

the popular artificial silver tip christmas tree

The silver tip is a very popular Christmas tree choice in the Pacific Northwest. This hardy, high elevation member of the fir family is treasured for the uniformity of its branches and overall pleasing appearance. However, the range at which these trees can be grown is quite limited and they can take more than a decade to mature. This ultimately means higher costs at the tree stand, particularly if you live far from the Northwest, the primary habitat of these trees. Purchasing an artificial silver tip Christmas tree is a cost-effective way to incorporate these majestic trees into your xmas celebrations. The price of an artificial silver tip Christmas tree is comparable to that of a fresh cut one, and has no shedding needles, watering requirements, and can be used year after year.

An artificial silver tip Christmas tree is an ideal component in a traditional family Christmas celebration. Multicolored bulbs, shiny tinsel, and handcrafted ornaments all complement the stately nature of this tree. The fact that you don’t have to throw it out and buy a new one next year is simply a bonus.

Of course, no matter how lovely the tree, the final arbiter of holiday ambience is the tree decorator. Strings of multicolored lights, individual handcrafted holiday heirlooms, as well as the traditional candy canes and tinsel are the elements that truly make a holiday celebration special. The internet is a treasury of knowledge, and the aspiring holiday designer can find a plethora of tips on decorating xmas trees using search engines.

Teen Truth or Dare Spin-Off Party Games

teen truth or dare spin-off party games

teen truth or dare spin-off party games

Truth or Dare is a classic teen party game. It is such a popular game that many twist and alternative versions have been invented since the original. If you are thinking about playing this game at your teenage party, but are worried that it may come off as cliché, then you might want to consider these fun spin-offs. For all of the games you will need to create some good truth or dares to use.

1. Dance and Dare

While the music is playing and all your guests are dancing throw a balloon into the mix. Let your friends have fun bopping it back and forth on the dance floor, but when the music stops the fun begins. After you stop the music whoever last touched the balloon must pop it and complete the truth or dare (T or D) inside. Afterward start the music up again and toss in another balloon. If you want you can throw in two balloons for every round, one for truth and one for dare. Make sure you prepare lots of balloons ahead of time. Write fun challenges on slips of paper and insert them into the balloons before inflating.

2. Never Have I Ever – Teen version

This is a fun truth or dare version of the popular party game “Never have I ever”. Pass everyone three pennies, or poker chips (something similar) to keep score. One person starts a statement with “Never have I ever…” then they must finish the statement by adding something they have never done before. Everyone who HAS done this before must give up one of their points. Then it’s the next person’s turn to make a “never have I ever” statement. If a person loses all their points then they must draw out of the naughty bag (a bag full of paper slips of truth or dare questions) and answer the truth or complete the dare that they pull out. They may then have three more points to continue playing.

3. Truth and Liars

In this fun teen party game you’ll have to decide which of your friends are lying. Can you do it? If not you may have to pay the consequences! Catch the liar and they will be the one’s paying the price.

How to play: Take three index cards and write truth on the back of two of them and liar on the back of the other. Place the cards face down and have three players pick one without showing the other players. Now ask a question such as: What is the most embarrassing thing your mom or dad has ever done in front of you? They each must answer according to their card: two being honest, the other one lying. You and the rest of your friends must come to an agreement on who is the liar. If you guess correctly then the liar must perform a T or D, but if the liar gets away with it then they get to pick another person to complete a truth or dare question or challenge. After, pick three new contestants and play again. So much fun!

4. Mr. Freeze

This is another funny truth or dare game for teens. This game can be played throughout the entire party. One person is designated as Mr. Freeze. At any point during the party he/she must freeze. Everyone that notices must freeze also. The last person to freeze must complete a dare. They then become the next Mr. Freeze.

5. Bite the Bag – Truth or Dare Version

This is a hilarious game to watch and play. Place a brown paper bag on the floor. A player must reach down, on one foot, and pick it up with their mouth. The only thing that is allowed to touch the floor is your foot, and the only thing that is allowed to touch the bag is your mouth. If someone fails or falls they must reach into the bag and pull out a Truth or dare to complete. After every round, cut off an inch from the top of the bag and play again. This game is like limbo in reverse. How low can you go?

Make sure to prepare the bag of truth or dare questions before the party. Write individual truths or dares onto slips of paper; fold them in half before putting them into the bag. Make sure you have plenty of fun and funny challenges.

Try A Wooden Dough Bowl In Your Country Home Decorating

try a wooden dough bowl in your country home decorating

try a wooden dough bowl in your country home decorating

The wooden dough bowl is a true expression of Indian art and Native style living. In the northern part of Mexico, high in the mountain regions, the Tarahumara people have rugged lifestyles and live in humble dwellings. They make handcrafts, like wooden dough bowls, in order to earn a living. I have always appreciated the intricate baskets, weavings, jewelry and other hand-crafted items created by this Tribe. It is fascinating that although the women are primarily in charge of making the handcrafts, the Tarahumara men enjoy working with wood and create exquisite pieces of art using simple and unsophisticated tools. Along with wooden dough bowls, they also carve wooden spoons, figurines and traditional game balls to use in traditional foot races. These items made of wood have a rustic beauty, complimented by the nature and quality of the wood.

You will also find it fascinating how the traditional dough bowls are made. The fashioning of the wooden bowl is begun by hand chiseling a piece of native yellow pine taken from a fallen tree trunk. American Indian log bowls are made by splitting the trunk in half and then roughly cutting it with an axe. The wood is then carved into a bowl like shape with a machete or large knife, giving it that one of a kind, rugged and hand-crafted design. This classic style is the same way that antique dough bowls have been made throughout the mountain region for centuries.

As you learn about these interesting Native people, you will discover that the wooden dough bowl is very important to the Tarahumara home. It is used to hand-grind corn and wheat to make hand-made tortillas, an essential part to the Tarahumara diet. They then begin by breaking the kernels into a stone bowl called a metate. The dough bowl is used to catch the flour at one end of the metate as it is ground. Water is then added to the flour in the bowl and tortillas are made by hand from the dough. Although still used by the Tarahumara people for food and other cooking purposes, today dough bowls are made available to the public for rustic home decorating and as Indian art for collection.

You will find a way to use dough bowls for many things. They look great as collectibles, fruit bowls, and when used with rustic decorating accessories. They are also great when used for art projects when a blank canvas is needed for rustic style paintings and other Native American style artwork. Dough bowls, painted with southwestern, Native American and western designs and scenes, are very popular and are a great way to bring the old west to life in your home decorating. A painted dough bowl is a wonderful main feature for any Native style room, cabin, lodge or ranch style home by using the rich warm colors unique to Native style art.

You can buy wooden dough bowls online and in many stores that sell southwestern and American Indian style home decorating items. It is easy to give genuine Native style to your home, or to give your room splash of color by including a rustic, painted dough bowl along with your decor. If you like the timeless customs and American Indian way of life, you will love having a piece of their amazing artwork as part of your home decorating. To add true Native culture to your home and produce a look that is definitely authentic, try adding a genuine native style wooden dough bowl to your home decor.
